Regional Director of the Caribbean

Position Overview


The Caribbean

The Caribbean Islands is a massive archipelago located in the Caribbean Sea, that can be subdivided into a few different regions: the Lucayan Archipelago, the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles and the ABC Islands. There are 13 sovereign states and 17 dependent territories in the Caribbean, and the predominant languages are English, Spanish, French, Dutch and Antillean creole. The Caribbean sprawls across more than 1.06 million square miles and is primarily located between North America and South America.

Young Life in the Caribbean

Young Life has existed in the Caribbean for over 50 years, with ministry beginning in Bermuda (the Bahamas and Bermuda are not technically in the Caribbean, but they are included in the role of the Caribbean Regional Director) and moving to a number of other islands. The role of the Young Life Caribbean Regional Director will be to oversee and develop Young Life in the all of the Caribbean Islands including Bermuda and the Bahamas but excluding Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The DR has a Regional Director giving leadership to the DR and Cuba and Haiti is in the process of naming a Haitian Regional Director.

Currently there are active Young Life ministries in the following islands:

  • The Bahamas

  • St. Thomas

  • St. Croix

  • Puerto Rico

Developing/restarting work:

  • Bermuda

  • Grand Caymans

  • Jamaica

Regional Director for the Caribbean

This position will require a very unique skill set of a seasoned Young Life staff person who can navigate any number of very, very different cultures, languages and socio-economic environments to build and establish and nurture national leadership development in every island in the YL Caribbean. Extensive travel will be required, excellent fiscal fundraising and management required, passionate Christ centered leadership will be vital. This leader will also need to connect and engage fully in the vision, strategy and community of the entire Latin America and Caribbean Division. This is a very exciting opportunity for the right person who is self-motivated, courageous, humble and full of joy and wisdom and faithful enough to believe that the Lord could actually create a robust, exciting, fruit producing ministry to teenagers throughout this gloriously beautiful part of the world.



Ministry Functions:

Spiritual Development– “Following Jesus.” Includes: Prayer and spiritual disciplines, fellowship, growth and health and church relationships.

  • Maintain a genuine and sincere commitment to understanding God’s Word and the disciplines of personal and corporate prayer.

  • Seek out and maintain relationships and disciplines, in the context of active participation in a church community, that lead to a vibrant spiritual life.

  • Actively participate in the spiritual life of the Young Life community.

  • Lead teams and individuals in spiritual development.

  • Develop a yearly personal growth plan that fosters a vibrant spiritual life, including time for solitude, retreat, reflection, prayer and Scripture reading.

  • Focuses regional leadership team and regional board ministry effort on following Jesus.

  • Ensure all ministry in the Region is designed and carried out with a dependence on prayer that takes place out of the overflow of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

  • Lead with humility, joy, and courage.


Leadership Development – “Equipping leaders, committee and staff.” Includes: Key volunteer care, recruiting, teambuilding and training, supervision and vision casting.

  • Work closely with the SVP to provide leadership and vision in the development and implementation of ministry strategies in the Caribbean to ensure we are reaching every kid.

  • The development of national leaders will be the primary leadership strategy.

  • Work with the local staff to assist with the implementation of the vision by training staff and volunteers, and creating camp opportunities to maximize ministry in the Caribbean.

  • Develop a region-wide leadership pipeline.

  • Participate as a full member of the SALT team, attending all required trainings and meetings.

  • Evaluate staff in their leadership development, personal spiritual formation, and area of ministry in a planned, regular, and formal strategy.


Direct Ministry – “Proclaiming and modeling.” Includes contact work, club, Campaigners and camp.

  • Work closely with the divisional office to develop vision, identify resources, and sharpen tools and programs to help reach every kid in the Caribbean.

  • Set yearly strategic ministry plans and initiatives in alignment with the LAC Divisional strategy.

  • Develop new areas, and identify interested adults to help the ministry to grow.

  • Work with the SVP and key staff in the region to recruit, screen, place, train, supervise, support, encourage and evaluate area, metro, direct ministry and staff.

  • Visit areas as needed, including routine and emergency crisis visits.

  • Observe and evaluate local areas to ensure Young Life ministry is carried out with excellence.

  • Ensure a plan is in place to grow Young Life in the region.

  • Maintain ministry contact with kids to the extent it is necessary to be effective in this role.

  • With the SVP, help develop and monitor all camping in the region.


Resource Development — “Fueling the ministry” includes events, major donor care, public relations (branding) and TDS team.

  • Develop and manage the budget for the office of the RD of Caribbean.

  • Own fiscal health of the ministry in the region. In the LAC Division, there is a zero deficit policy.

  • Set clear financial goals, strategy and accountability for applicable staff in the region.

  • Work with the Development department to strategize fundraising efforts.

  • Work with the Divisional office to implement an indigenous fundraising plan.

  • Ensure a development plan involving a regional vision statement, strategy, and financial master plan is implemented and reviewed.

  • Model and encourage local leadership to develop critical relationships with church, non-profit, business, and government leaders throughout the region and explore and lead joint ventures with likeminded organizations.

  • Facilitate networking for staff and committees to build relationships, share best practices and innovative ideas.

  • Engage in the LAC Divisional Committee. Develop an Action Team focused on the region.


Ministry Support – “Taking care of business” Includes accounting, administration, communication (internal).

  • Maintain professionalism concerning office hours, dress, conduct and time management, adhering to all Young Life policies and procedures.

  • Develop an appropriate system for reporting, expense report responsibilities and the use of area funds using Young Life accounting applications.

  • Provide clear, prompt, appropriate and professional communication to everyone involved in ministry.

  • Oversee compliance with established policies and procedures with all staff, leaders, and legal entities in region.

  • Perform other duties as assigned and congruent with gifts.

  • Accept both short and long-term assignments of projects.


Working Conditions:

  • Reside within region or spend 50% to 60% of time in region.

  • 40% travel required; Up to 60% travel may be expected.

  • Could include the extremes of a camp assignment, e.g. heat/cold, dirt, long hours and the physical demands of hiking, horseback riding, boating, etc. Staff person must be able to handle these conditions.

  • Frequent travel to be with staff and listen to their needs.

Qualifications Required for the Job:

  • Ability to lead in a cross-cultural environment.

  • Multilingual.

  • Have demonstrated expertise in regional management.

  • Must be able to supervise at a distance.

  • Proven spiritual leader.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions in a manner consistent with position requirements and Young Life’s mission statement and values.

  • Demonstrates relational skills with diverse groups of people.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to analyze complex problems, develop logical and creative solutions and empower others toward implementation.

  • Ability to connect well with others and influence across boundaries.

  • Ability to work at highest levels of confidentiality.

  • Spanish language proficiency preferred.



  • College degree preferred.

  • Completed required Young Life traininngs
